Like much of the world, I couldn’t help but tune in to the newly released Michael biopic, offering a glimpse into the “King of Pop’s” world before he became the icon we know today.

The film traces his journey from a young boy to an international sensation—but does it serve as a genuine revisit of his legacy, or is it another attempt to profit from Michael Jackson one last time?

Exploitation is nothing new for the Jackson family. Born into a musical dynasty, with his brothers forming The Jackson 5, Michael displayed an almost innate stage presence from an early age. Juliano Valdi, portraying young Michael, captures that charisma while subtly conveying the fear that seemed to shadow him.

The role of Joseph Jackson—Michael’s overbearing and domineering father—is portrayed by Colman Domingo. His presence looms large, embodying the complex and often turbulent dynamic between father and son. This relationship, central to both Michael’s real life and the film’s narrative, helps shape the trajectory of his rise.

The biopic follows Michael’s transformation from child star to global phenomenon, highlighting key moments along the way:

Spoiler incoming (but kinda not cause RIP)

● 1966: Michael’s birth into a musical family and his early days as a child star with the Jackson 5 (no mention of the Carol Burnett show)

● 1978: His transition to a solo artist and move to Los Angeles, California

● 1981: Michael seeking legal independence from his father and the Jackson 5

● 1983: The release of “Thriller” (mentions of inspo and music video)

● 1988: “The Bad” era and Michael’s continued innovation in music and performance

As the film unfolds, it raises questions about the true motivations behind its release…Is it a genuine attempt to revisit and honor Michael Jackson’s legacy, or is it a cash grab? The answer likely falls somewhere in between. While the biopic does offer a comprehensive look at the life of the King of Pop, it also benefits from the enduring popularity of Michael Jackson.

Ultimately, the film's impact will depend on how it is received by audiences and critics. Will it be seen as a respectful tribute to his legacy or a calculated attempt to profit from his name and music? What remains true is that Michael Jackson will forever remain the true King of Pop.
