Some records arrive with intention, others arrive through living. Getaway, the new album from Juju B. Goode, belongs firmly in the latter category - a collection of songs shaped quietly over time, pulled together by instinct rather than expectation.
Here’s what Juju B. Goode said about his new album:
Leisa: When did this EP start taking shape?
Juju: This EP wasn’t really preconceived. It came together naturally over the course of this year. Through everyday life, road trips to places like New Mexico and Big Sur, and playing open mics with just acoustic guitar and vocals. A couple months ago, I realized I’d been playing these songs consistently at shows, so I decided to put them all together last minute as a gift to myself and to listeners, wrapping up the year. It grew gradually and organically.
Leisa: What was happening in your life when you realized this body of work wanted to exist?
Juju: This year was a period of deep introspection and acceptance. After moving to LA last year, my first year was filled with uncertainty and a more reserved mindset. This year, I shifted toward reaching out more, doing my best, and enjoying the ride. This EP reflects that growth and the gratitude I feel for the people in my life and the place I’m in now.
Rather than pulling inward, he began reaching out, trusting himself more, and learning to enjoy the process instead of resisting it. Getaway captures that growth, grounded in gratitude for the people around him and the place he’s landed emotionally.
Leisa: Was there a guiding emotion or theme you kept coming back to while writing?
Juju: Gratitude was a big one, along with growth in my faith. I began seeing hardship and loneliness as meaningful parts of growth rather than things to resist. That perspective kept coming back while writing and shaped the emotional core of the EP.
Leisa: How did your songwriting process evolve while working on this EP compared to past releases?
Juju: A lot of songs were recorded in one take. It was an exercise in trusting the process and not overthinking, while still being prepared. I wanted to believe in the magic of the moment and avoid relying heavily on technology or post-editing. The goal was to capture the rawness of what I was feeling in real time.
Leisa: Were there any songs that surprised you - either in how they came together or what they ended up meaning?
Juju: Taos Hum really surprised me. It came from a trip to Taos, New Mexico, where the landscape and energy felt surreal, I woke up from a vivid dream there, came up with a guitar lick, and started jamming with Pablo, who I was traveling with. When recording the EP, I collaborated with Mild Monk, and we let the song reveal itself, No edits, no preconceived ideas. The final take is completely improvised, and it became something new because we trusted the process.

Leisa: How does this EP reflect who you are right now versus who you were on your last release?
Juju: In some ways, it feels like a return to my earlier work, like Garden, which was more introspective and melancholic. But this EP feels more mature. I’ve changed, and I see things differently now. I feel more comfortable with my ideas and more grounded in who I am.
Leisa: Do you feel like this project marks a turning point in your career or creative identity?
Juju: Turning point feels a bit dramatic, but it does feel like the beginning of a new chapter. This Ep sets the tone for what I want to explore more deeply next year,
For listeners discovering him for the first time through this album, the intention is simple: to be felt. To let honesty cut through the perfectionism so often driven by technology, and to remind listeners that truth still resonates.
To celebrate the release, he’s hosting a watch party on January 8, featuring a visual created for the album. Fans can join his Discord, Buenavista, or follow him on Instagram (@jujubgoode) for more details - a fitting invitation for a project rooted in connection, presence, and shared experience.
